Children attend from a wide geographical area – from Kawakawa to the central Bay of Islands including Opua, Russell, Haruru Falls, Karatu, Oromahoe and Pakaraka. The community is made up of families who come from a diverse range of cultures.
We are a staff of three full-time and one part time (20hrs per week), fully qualified and registered early year’s educators with a part-time staff support/administration person and consider ourselves privileged to be working with the young children attending the kindergarten. We have an adult to child ratio of 1:10.
The teaching team at Waitangi Kindergarten are committed to an emergent, child focussed, child initiated, play and resource based curriculum embracing the principles of the national early childhood curriculum Te Whariki. We believe that it is our responsibility to notice what children are interested in, recognise the learning taking place and respond appropriately so that children can learn more about themselves and their world. We are passionate in our role to guide children to reach their full potential by providing and facilitating a safe yet challenging and stimulating environment that supports the acquisition of skills and knowledge; develops confidence to explore and experience new things; and fosters a love of life-long learning.
We are an enviroschools kindergarten acquiring bronze status in August 2019. We continue to embrace and incorporate the enviroschools kaupapa of sustainable practices and whakawhanaungatanga daily within our programme as we work towards silver accreditation.
We have an enduring respect for the dual heritage of Aotearoa/New Zealand and the cultural heritage of all children, whānau and staff and this is reflected in our daily programme and interactions with the community.
Whakawhanaungatanga is an important part of the pumanawatanga (morale, tone, pulse) of our kindergarten and we pride ourselves on being a warm and welcoming centre where whanau are invited to contribute and participate in the daily programme.
We welcome visitors to come and view the kindergarten at anytime!
Ka kite ano! We hope to see you soon!
