Manaia Kindergarten
Manaia Kindergarten is set overlooking the picturesque inlet of Parua Bay in the Whangarei Heads community. We have 30 children each morning who explore their interests with support from enthusiastic teachers who encourage and challenge their learning.
During 2006-2009 Manaia Kindergarten took part in the Foundations for Discover Ministry’s ICT early childhood program. Technology is used by children, families and teachers to enhance children’s learning experiences, and support our rich and varied programme.
Curriculum
Animals are established in the Manaia Kindergarten programme. Children have been learning about and taking care of the animals around us. The Bantams have joined us in the play ground - permenantly. Flies are caught for the frogs, fresh pond water added after an excursion down the road to the pond. New tadpoles have been introduced from older siblings.
Sharing their learning
Substantial portfolios tell their stories and are treasured. Children use digital camera’s to record their own stories and these are printed for their portfolios, or children use the photos to narrate movies which are displayed on the Kindergarten blog. Our open blog shares the kindergarten programme with parents, wider families and the world. All leave comments for our children – to commend, encourage and challenge. Relationships are built with the wider families through our blog as Grandparents, Aunts/Uncles and friends from around the world login to watch and support. Teachers from national and international schools and early childhood centres communicate with teachers and children through our blog. You can learn more about our programme by visiting www.manaiakindergarten.blogspot.com See the children’s contributions, or leave them a comment.
Family Involvement
A dedicated group of families, and a parent group, are essential in their ongoing support of the teachers and the kindergarten programme. Families take part in the everyday activities, or help on committees, or join us on our regular social evenings and events.
Arts and Craft Show
Manaia Kindergarten families run our major fundraiser – the Manaia Mid Winter Arts and Craft Show, on Queen’s Birthday Monday (6 June 2011). This calendar highlight is well attended by the wider community, the city of Whangarei, and visitors.
20 free hours available for all children attending the kindergarten over 3 years.
We are open from Monday to Friday 8.30am - 1pm.
